Facts & Figures About the Veal Industry
In General:
- Milk-fed veal calves are raised to approximately 182 to 205 kg (400-450
lbs), which is achieved at approximately five months of age. Grain-fed
veal calves are raised to 272 to 319 kg (600-700 lbs), achieved at six to
seven months of age.
- Ontario produces approximately 40% of Canadas veal production;
Quebec 55%, and the remaining 5% is scattered between Alberta and British
Columbia.
- Approximately 70% of Ontarios veal is processed in
provincially inspected plants to be sold within the province. The
remaining 30% is processed in federally inspected plants or exported to
the US. Under normal trade conditions almost 75% of the milk fed veal
produced in Ontario is destined for export markets, while less than 5% of
grain fed veal is exported.
